Tribute to Enric Granados

Posted by Redacción on April 3, 2008  |  Leave a comment

The Biblioteca de Catalunya, which along with Tritó Editiones has participated in the publication of the second edition of the Complete Works for Voice and Piano by Enric Granados, was the venue of Homage to Granados, an event held 1 April in the library’s Llevant Hall. The event saw the presentation of the new edition of the score of the Complete Works for Voice and Piano, several of which were performed by Manuel García Morante, composer, pianist and reviser of the works, and the soprano Yrene Martínez Roca. The concert also starred Granados’ piano, restored for the occasion. This new edition of the Complete Works for Voice and Piano includes the addition of nine songs discovered in recent years, two of which, unfortunately, are incomplete. We hope that in the not too distant future more sources will to appear to further our knowledge of Granados’ vocal works.

The most important studies on Granados available from Tritó

Tritó has put a great deal of effort into compiling the latest bibliography on Granados, and now has a very significant number of titles. Walter Aaron Clark’s book “Enrique Granados: poet of the piano” and Carol A. Hess’ “Enrique Granados. A Bio Bibliography”, as well as Mark Larrad’s doctoral thesis fill a historical lack of serious studies of one of the most international Catalan composers of all times. The situation with Albéniz was similar until studies such as those by Jacinto Torres, “The Catalan Theatre Works of Enrique Granados” (“Iberia de Isaac Albéniz a través de sus manuscritos” or “Catálogo sistemático descriptivo de las obras musicales de Isaac Albéniz”) appeared. In addition, we should mention the interesting and extremely well documented biographical novel about Granados, “El rossinyol abatut: Enric Granados, una vida apassionada” by John W. Milton. All of these titles can be found in the BOOKS section of our website.

Manuel Castillo and Antonio José, Tritó novelties

As part of our efforts to revive 20th-century Spanish symphonic music, Tritó now offers  “Sinfonía Castellana” by Antonio José, a rare example of orchestral savior faire from this great musician who died in the Civil War. This publication is fruit of an agreement with FUNDACIÓN SIGLO of the Regional Government of Castilla y León. On the other hand, as part of an agreement signed with the Junta de Andalucía for the publication of the catalogue of the late Manuel Castillo, Tritó has just released Castillo’s “Sinfonia nº 1″ and “Concierto para piano y orquesta”, which will facilitate the diffusion of the music by the Sevillian composer, one of the lesser known figures of the generation of the 1951. Finally, Tritó’s catalogue of contemporary composers has been enlarged with the addition of “Lumières abyssales – Chroma I” for orchestra by Hèctor Parra; “Wasserfall” and “Memento” for piano by Jesús Torres, in addition to “Verwandlung” by David Padrós for flute quartet.

Benet Casablancas was born in Sabadell in 1956 and studied in Barcelona under Josep Soler and Antoni Ros-Marbà and later in Vienna under Friedrich Cerha and K.H. Füssl. Although he devotes a great deal of his time to working as a music educator, theorist and critic, it is accomplishments as a composer that have brought him his international reputation. His works have won awards in competitions around the world and are performed regularly by the most prestigious specialized orchestras and ensembles. Now his long career as a composer has been rewarded with the highest distinction conceded by the Catalan government in the field: the Premi Nacional de Música. Tritó has published five of Mr Casablancas’ most recent works and will soon be releasing others, including the symphonic works The Dark Backward of Time, Intrada sobre el nom de Dalí and the impromptu for orchestra Alter Klang.
