A year to remember

Over the course of the year 2004 there have been numerous performances of Jesús Rueda’s works, several of which merit special mention. Last May James MacMillan conducted the Spanish Radio and Television (RTVE) Orchestra in a performance of Rueda’s 1st Symphonies and 2nd Symphonie.

The prestigious Arditti String Quartet also honoured him with a concert consisting entirely of his quartets in September at the Alicante Contemporary Music Festival. Finally, the Cadaqués Orchestra, conducted by Gianandrea Noseda, performed his work Elephant Skin during their tour of Spain this past October. The main concert was held at the Madrid Auditorio as part of the Ibermúsica concert season.

“Britain’s Arditti Quartet played a monographic programme of Rueda’s works at the 20th Alicante International Contemporary Music Festival. The Quartet interpreted Quartet Nº 1, Quartet Nº 2 Desde las sombras, el Quartet Nº 3 Islas (world premiere) and, accompanied by the pianist Ananda Sukarlan, the quintet with piano Bitácora.

Meanwhile, Rueda dedicated an arrangement of his Quartet No. 3 “Islas” to the Reina Sofía Chamber Orchestra on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the ensemble’s founding , with the premiere slated for the near future.”

David del Puerto at the Alicante International Contemporary Music Festival

On the first of October, the 20th Alicante International Contemporary Music Festival presented the play Comedia (moments from “La vida es sueño” by Calderón de la Barca), with music by David del Puerto.

Meanwhile, in September David del Puerto’s two works for piano Alio modo and Rejoice were performed by Alberto Rosado in Chile.

Jesús Torres and his Variations for cello and piano

David Apellániz (cello) and Alberto Rosado (piano) will play the work by Jesús Torres’s “Variations for cello and piano” at the Cervantes Institute in London. The work will be performed again at the Thyssen Museum in Madrid.

Premiere of Concert for piano by Xavier Benguerel

This coming 26 November Xavier Benguerel’s Concerto for Piano will premiere at the Auditori in Barcelona. Commissioned by the OBC, the work will be performed by the same orchestra conducted by Josep Caballé Domenech and with the soloist Albert Attenelle. There will be further performances on the 27th and the 28th.

Barcelona première of Guinjoan’s, Concerto for clarinet and orchestra

“This past 16 April, the Auditori de Barcelona hosts the premier of Concerto for Clarinet and orchestra by Joan Guinjoan. The clarinet soloist is Lluna, who will be accompanied by the OBC conducted by first conductor Martínez-Izquierdo.

Tritó has already published his Symphony nº 2, “Ciutat de Tarragona” and Pantonal for orchestra. We will soon be publishing Verbum for piano. Guinjoan composed the opera Gaudí, which will premier at the Liceu in 2005.”

Premiere of Puerto’s Nigredo and Advenit

“The “Octeto Ibérico” leaded by Elías Arizcuren, premiered the del Puerto’s Nigredo , at CCCB inside the Contemporary Music Festival Barcelona on 31 March.

In other news, del Puerto’s work for chamber ensemble and clarinet Advenit was premiered this 7 April during the Religious Music Week in the city of Cuenca. The clarinet soloist will be Lluna, to whom the work is dedicated.

Tritó has recently published his String Quartet and  Mirada and is preparing the publication of “Nigredo”, “Advenit”, “Diario”, “Nocturno”, for soprano and “Trio with piano”. Del Puerto is also the author of “Concerto for Violin and Orchestra” and “Mito”, for 13 instruments, among many other works.”

Torres La Tumba de Antígona draws acclaim

“This past 13 February, the National Orchestra of Spain, conducted by the first conductor Pons, premiered to great acclaim La tumba de Antígona by the Spanish composer Torres, at the Auditorio Nacional de Madrid.

Tritó has recently published his String Trio , Itzal for accordion, Preludios I-IV for piano. Soon to be published: Cadenza for piano, and “ Crepuscular and “La Tumba de Antígona” for orchestra. Torres also composed Concerto for piano , recently recorded for the RTVE-Música label.Jesús Torres has also been chosen to compose the commissioned work for the 7th Competition, which will be held in Barcelona on 29 July 2004.”

18th-century Catalan orchestral music in Poland

This past 18 February, the conductor Moraleda gave, at the Pomeranian Philharmonic Hall (Poland), a concert devoted exclusively to 18th-century Catalan orchestral music.

The programme comprised symphonies, overtures and concertos by Sor, Baguer, Terradellas, Duran and the brothers Joan and Josep Pla, all published by Tritó. The works were performed by the Capella Bydgostiensis and the concert was supported by the Cervantes Institute of Warsaw.

Coming publication of La rosa del azafrán

Tritó will soon be publishing Guerrero’s popular zarzuela “La rosa del azafrán“. This edition, the first of this work, is the result of the continuing joint efforts by Tritó and the Fundación Guerrero to publish a definitive edition of Guerrero’s works.

La rosa del azafrán will be performed 20 to 24 April in Seville at the Teatro de La Maestranza and 1 to 8 June in Oviedo at the Teatro Campoamor. In both cases it is the same production that was performed last year at the Teatro de la Zarzuela of Madrid.

In other news Tritó and the Fundación Guerrero are continuing with the publication of the eight volumes of the composer’s Romanzas y Canciones . The first two volumes came out last year and the remaining six are scheduled to come out during 2004.
