Over recent months, we have given out new titles from our collection. We remain with our purpose of recovering Spanish repertoire and promoting the works of new Spanish composers.

Works by Joan Guinjoan, Albert Guinovart, Felip Pedrell … all of them included at new recordings performed by the Cadaqués Orchestra or theOrquestra de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya.

Upcoming concerts

Imagen agendaMaybe you are still not aware that Tritó has a concert schedule, which provides details of all our composers’ musical activity, both around Spain and abroad.

To begin with, last week, on the 23 and 25 February, the Oviedo Filarmonía, under the baton of Lorenzo Ramos, performed the Tonadillas by Enric Granados with orchestration by Albert Guinovart, at the Auditorio Príncipe Felipe in Oviedo and the Madrid auditorium.

And on 26 February in Biscaya, the Orquestra Simfònica de Bilbao and the Orfeón Donostiarra continued the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the death Jesús Guridi, performing his “Cuadros Vascos” at the Teatro Social Antzokia in Basauri

We can recommend seven concerts in March: if you were at the Centre Pompidou in Paris on the 2nd of the month you may have listened to the Ensemble Intercontemporain playing “Stress Tensor” by Hèctor Parra. On the 11th, Sortilegis, by Xavier Montsalvatge, will be performed at the Teatro Monumental in Madrid by the Orquestra de RTVE, and on the following day, at the same venue and with soloists from the same orchestra, you can listen to the Quartet with oboe by Jesús Torres

Continuing in the month of March, other concerts are La rosa del azafrán, by Jacinto Guerrero in Albacete on the 18th, Orchestral highlights from the opera Pepita Jiménez by Isaac Albéniz (edited by José de Eusebio) in Reutlingen (Germany), and the Obertura del ballet Alphonse et Léonore ou L’amant peintre by Ferran Sor in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, both on the 24th. And lastly, on 29 March the students from the Salamanca Music Conservatory will play the Concert for bassoon and chamber ensemble by Agustí Charles

There’s sure to be something that interests you among all these works. As you know, if you want to go to a concert, consult the schedule for the next few months. Enjoy yourselves!

El Gato con Botas (Puss in Boots), reduction for piano

El gato con Botas, an opera by Xavier Montsalvatge with a libretto by Nestor Luján based on the story by C. Perrault, has been newly published as a reduced version for piano and voice.

This opera, composed by the Catalan composer in 1948, is one of the liveliest examples of contemporary Spanish opera and has been staged on several occasions – the latest was a co-production by the Teatro Real and the Liceu – both in its original version and as the adaptation made in 1996 by Albert Guinovart for chamber ensemble.

Gianandrea Noseda conducts Albéniz and Granados

The recent tour of the Orquesta de Cadaqués, conducted by Gianandrea Noseda, with concerts in Girona (28 April) and Zaragoza (29 Abril) focussed on Spanish music. The repertoire consisted of pieces by Isaac Albéniz, to mark the centenary of his death, and Enrique Granados, and their works were interpreted using the orchestrations that Albert Guinovart was commissioned to write by Tritó Edicions.

The Orquesta de Cadaqués presented four pieces from the Suite Española (Cadiz, Asturias, Cordoba and Sevilla) by Albéniz as well as his Canciones Italianas, interpreted by Ainhoa Arteta. Las Tonadillas by Enrique Granados completed a first part in which the Orquesta de Cadaqués, Gianandrea Noseda and Ainhoa Arteta paid their own special homage to Spanish music.

The concert programme was completed by F. Schubert’s Symphony nº 4.

El Soldadito de Plomo, at Petit Peralada

logo de peraladaThe Perelada Festival embarks on a new venture with a firm commitment to attracting new audiences by bringing classical music in a broad range of formats to children. The Cadaqués Orchestra Ensemble, which has always had among its goals to educate people about music, will be performing “El soldadito de Plomo” (The Steadfast Tin Soldier) composed by Emilio Aragón, based on the tale by Hans Christian Andersen.

With great descriptive and dramatic power, Aragón’s music for this universal tale takes us through the story, narrated by the actress Rosa Novell, of the adventures of a toy soldier in love with a ballerina.

The narration is in Catalan, with Jaime Martín conducting the arrangement by Albert Guinovart. The Catalan version is available from Tritó as part of our La Corxera Juganera collection and will soon be out in Spanish with narration by Javier Cámara.

Re-edition of the Granados’ Opera Goyescas

Tritó announces the re-edition on CD of the live performance of  “Goyescas o Los majos enamorados” by the Catalan composer Enrique Granados, recorded at the Auditori Enrique Granados in Lérida, as part of the events to commemorate the 700th Anniversary of the University of Lérida, on 21 and 22 April 1997. It is performed by the Orquestra de Cadaqués conducted by Gianandrea Noseda, the Coral de Bilbao and the soloists Carmen González, Josep Ruiz, Maite Arruabarrena and Alfonso Echevarría. The recording is of Albert Guinovart’s orchestral arrangements, whose intention was to “clarify as far as possible the instrumentation while respecting the original manuscript, and to heighten the most meaningful aspects, as well as strengthen the melodic aspect of the orchestra.” Every measure of this work is marked by the spirit of Granados, a fundamental figure in Catalan musical nationalism and romanticism. Still we should stress in this recording some of its masterful moments, such as the Intermezzo, or moments as sublime as the entire third part, which from the interlude to the last measure is of incomparable beauty. The opera Goyescas is based on an earlier piece by the composer, of the same title, but written for the piano. Granados drew his inspiration from Goya, specifically the sketches he did for this tapestries for the Crown, which the composer saw during his stay in Madrid in 1898. His words on the subject, found in a range of texts and letters, are quite clear: “In my Goyescas I have concentrated my entire personality. I fell in love with Goya’s mind and with his palette; and thus with his Maja, señora; with his Majo, aristocrat; with him and with the Duchess of Alba, with his quarrelling, with his loves, with his flirtatious remarks.”

New works by Albert Guinovart, Jesús Rueda and Hèctor Parra

Tritó announces the release of Symphony I by Jesús Rueda, composed in 2000, and since its premiere lauded by critics as one of the most important orchestral works of our day. The recording by the Spanish National Youth Orchestra conducted by Ernest Martínez-Izquierdo – also including symphonies by Jesús Torres and David del Puerto – has also received widespread praise in the specialist press. The piece, which is scored for large orchestra with triple woodwinds, six horns, piano and three percussionists, is subtitled Laberinto in reference to the labyrinth from classic mythology and a programme which takes the listener on a journey in four stages each joined and resolved by the Sphinx, with the Minotaur as the apotheosis of the work at the end of the journey. Tritó Edicions has also released three new works by Hèctor Parra: Time Fields II, Time Fields III – composed for unaccompanied instruments – and Andante sospeso, a duet for flute (or clarinet) and piano. The latter title refers to the counterpoint between the concept of mobile and static sound, with the flute and piano alternating in the creation of atmospheres which are at once complementary and opposing. Time Fields II, on the other hand, is written for solo clarinet and exploits all the potential of the instrument (multiphonics, microtones, changes in timbre), while Time Fields III, originally conceived for baritone saxophone and later adapted for bass clarinet, now appears in version for solo flute. The work is constructed out of three separate instrumental materials – melodic lines, extended notes and complex rhythms – which are combined with the many shifts in speed which mark the work. Tritó’s saxophone repertoire, meanwhile, grows with the piece Haendeliana, which Albert Guinovart originally composed for performance with voice, recalling the opera arias of the Baroque composer Georg F. Haendel. The success of the piece inspired the composer to make several versions and transcriptions, and this one is adapted for soprano saxophone, clarinet or oboe, accompanied by the piano.

Albert Guinovart’s Mar i Cel takes four Max Awards

guinovartThe pianist and composer Albert Guinovart was one of the big winners at the 9th Max Performing Arts Awards, organized by Spanish Society of Authors and Editors (SGAE). The theatre production Mar i Cel by the company Dagoll Dagom, with music by Guinovart, took four awards, including Best Musical Stage Production and Best Musical Director. The winners were announced on 13 March in Barcelona. The score for the Obertura de Mar i Cel is available from the Tritó catalogue.
