Our conductors (IV). Sir Neville Marriner

Posted by Cristina Martí on August 17, 2011  |  Leave a comment

In this fourth entry we continue our overview of the conductors who have recorded with Tritó. On this occasion, we call to mind Sir Neville Marriner, who has been principal guest conductor of the Cadaqués Orchestra since 1992.

Sir Neville Marriner studied violin at the Royal College of Music in London and the Paris Conservatoire. In 1949 he joined the Martin String Quartet and founded the Jacobean Ensemble with Thurston Dart and the Virtuoso String Trio, and worked with legendary directors such as Toscanini, Furtwängler, Cantelli and Karajan.

In 1959 he founded the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields, where he was concertmaster and later chief conductor. He has also conducted the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra.

He has been decorated twice for his work on behalf of music: he received a CBE in 1979 and was knighted in 1985. In addition, the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields with Sir Neville Marriner has received the Queen’s Award for Export Achievement in recognition of their accomplishments as concert performers.

Sir Neville Marriner’s most prolific period in terms of recordings with the Cadaques Orchestra and Tritó was when he was chief conductor, releasing albums with works by Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga, with the voice of Ainhoa Arteta, such as the Obertura de los esclavos felices, works by Fauré and Gounod, and a CD with three fantastic compositions by Stravinski, Montsalvatge and Prokofiev (Pulcinella Suite, Sortilegis and the Classical Symphony respectively). In addition, he has recorded Pulcinella in its full version in a concert for which David Nel·lo wrote and narrated a tale of imagination set in the city of Tifna, with princesses, good and bad characters, and elephants.

Sir Neville Marriner has conducted works by Mozart with the Cadaqués Orchestra on numerous occasions, resulting in three albums: the Sinfonias concertantes, a double CD with four concertos, for flute (K.313), for oboe (K.314), for clarinet (K.622) and for bassoon (K.191, and, lastly, the Concertos 1 and 2 for flute and the Concerto for flute and harp on a CD which has just been re-released with a more modern design. On this latter album, the solo flutist is Jaime Martín, currently chief conductor of the Cadaqués Orchestra, and the harpist is Bryn Lewis. In the case of another great composer, Beethoven, Sir Neville Marriner has recorded his Symphonies 1,2,5 and 6 with Tritó on two fantastic CDs.

Last but not least, the three Sinfonias Concertantes by Danzi, Fernando Sor’s Overtures and Symphonies and the works of the contemporary composer Joan Guinjoan, Sincrotó and Alba, are the three other recordings that the period when the Cadaqués Orchestra performed under the baton of the brilliant English conductor has left for posterity.

Logo Biblioteca de CatalunyaAs you probably already know, the Biblioteca de Catalunya has an important music archive and an interesting catalogue of scores and music publications. What you may not know is that Tritó has held the exclusive distribution rights to these materials for the last two years.
In this list we present all the currently available titles published by the Biblioteca de Catalunya: works by Isaac Albéniz, Josep Cabanilles, Josep Elies, Joan Baptista Pujol, Joan Balcells and many others.

And you must also know that thanks to the recent improvements made to our search engine, you can narrow down and combine the list we offer you to locate works by instrument, composer, epoch, style, level of difficulty and so on. For example, out of the 44 results in an initial list, we can narrow down by format so that the system tells us there are 6 conductor’s scores, 3 facsimiles… Or perhaps you’re interested in knowing what choral works the Biblioteca has published…

Unquestionably, there is much to discover among the publications of the Biblioteca de Catalunya – and the many other publishers whose catalogues you can explore in the Shop at trito.es. And don’t forget that if you can’t find what you’re looking for, you can always write to info@trito.es.

In the shop at trito.es we have decided to make things easier for you when it comes to browse sheet music. Smart Search Filters

Tired of having to navigate through endless pages of results to find a particular score or a particular album? At trito.es we value your time and don’t want you to waste it, so we’ve decided to make searching easier. With the new smart menu you can navigate very quickly through the entire catalogue by adding and removing search filters as you like. This new tool enables you to narrow down a search through the 20,000 titles available in the store in order to view only the two or three that you interest you, forgetting the rest, and all in just four clicks.

You can filter by instrument, ensemble, genre, epoch, level, author, publisher and format … and this is just scores! There are also special filters for books and CDs: subject, format, language, duration, …You can also add as many instruments as you want. Imagine that you play in a chamber group consisting of flute, oboe, clarinet, violin, cello and piano. Just go on adding instruments until you obtain the result of the search.

Also new are the large flyout windows in the main menu where you can view all the possibilities at once (instruments, ensembles, authors and so on).

Much more accurate searches

We have improved the algorithm of the general search engine to make it much faster, more efficient and effective so that it will now return more relevant results. In addition, these results can be narrowed down even further by using the smart filters, so now the only limit is your imagination!

User-friendly presentation of results

landing_piano_blog_enWith a catalogue as extensive as ours, and with it expected to double in size this year, we cannot allow you be swamped by the masses of results from the larger categories. To avoid this we have created special pages where the results are organised in a clearer and friendlier format (with direct links, guidance, grouping of results by ensemble or publisher, novelties, etc). It is much clearer and easier to find your bearings and browse a page like the one in the picture below than to be presented with a list of 3500 works for piano, although if you still prefer the entire list of works you can view it by following the link shown on each page.

The same applies to authors with many works. They are now clearly presented to make your search faster and more accurate. For example, you can see how the catalogue of works by Isaac Albéniz is organized: latest novelties, scores according to the ensemble, publishers and so on.

All these improvements have been made thinking of you and your needs as a musician and music lover. We hope that you like them and we encourage you to visit the shop, test the new tools, search, locate what you need … and enjoy yourself. Because looking for classical music has never been so much fun. ;-)
