Reducing Dalí

After the fantastic recent premiere of the opera in four acts, “Yo, Dalí”, by Xavier Benguerel, which was performed last June by the Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid and the Coro del Teatro de la Zarzuela conducted by Antonio Fauró, the reduced version is now avalable from Tritó. The same as another reduction that we published this summer, The Magic Opal, by Albéniz, you can rent the full score of the opera or acquire this version for voices, choir and piano.

On continuation we would like to offer a short news item televised by RTVE on the occasion of the premiere, where you can listen to Benguerel himself discussing his work.

Yo, Dalí

On Wednesday 8 June at 8:00 pm, the world premiere of the opera “Yo, Dalí” will take place, to be followed by two further performances on 10 and 11 June at the same time. The work was composed by Xavier Benguerel with a libretto by Jaime Salom and commissioned by the Spanish Ministry of Culture to commemorate, in 2004, the centenary of the birth of the Catalan painter Salvador Dalí. The score is published by Tritó Edicions.

The day before the premiere, on 7 June at 7:30 pm, the authors will speak at a conference moderated by Juan Ángel Vela del Campo.

The lead roles in “Yo, Dalí” will be played by Joan Martín-Royo, as Dalí, and Marisa Martins, as Gala. The rest of the cast is made up by Antoni Comas, Carlos Cremades, Vicenç Esteve Madrid, José Antonio García,  Xavier Mendoza, Hasmik Nahapetyan, Alex Sanmartí, Claudia Schneider and Mariano Viñuales, among others, accompanied by the Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid and the Choir of the Teatro de la Zarzuela, under the baton of Antonio Fauró.
Miquel Ortega is responsible for the music direction and Xavier Abertí, the stage direction, in this co-production by Operadehoy, the Teatro de La Zarzuela and the Gran Teatro del Liceo.

On Monday 23 March, the Orquesta de Cadaqués ensemble, under the baton of Alejandro Posada, interpreted a programme that included three fundamental works by the composers Xavier Benguerel (Hexagrama), Ernest Martínez Izquierdo (Norte-Sur) and Jesús Rueda (Chamber concerto no 2).

These three works, written in very different languages, present part of the current Spanish music scene.

The concert was completed by one of Arnold Schonberg’s masterworks, Ode to Napoleon, with a solo contribution by the baritone and actor David Moss.

La Fontaine Fables at the Porta Ferrada Festival

Contemporary music, audiovisual art and universal stories come together at the Festival de la Porta Ferrada in Sant Feliu de Guíxols (Gerona) as the Cadaqués Orchestra Ensemble presents Cinco Fábulas de La Fontaine.

To complement the live music, by the composer Xavier Benguerel, and narration, by the actor Lluís Soler, Tritó commissioned an animated film by Pere Puig to be shown simultaneously in order to bring the fables, their characters and metaphors to life for spectators of all ages.

Xavier Benguerel premieres Palau d’hivern at La Pedrera

This 22 February at the auditorium of La Pedrera in Barcelona the composer Xavier Benguerel premieres his latest work Palau d’hivern, four poems for soprano, clarinet and string quartet based on texts by Àlex Susanna. The piece, which is roughly fifteen minutes long, will be performed by the Quartet Glinka with Josep Fuster (clarinet) and Mónica Luezas (soprano). The programme also includes the version for reciter plus ten instruments of Benguerel’s 7 Faules de La Fontaine, performed by Joan Borràs (reciter) and members of the Orquestra Julià Carbonell de les Terres de Lleida.

Xavier Benguerel will be celebrating his 75th birthday throughout the year 2006.
